Movie Where 3 Scientists Go Back in Time

It's not often that a film comes along that earns such a universally negative response that it becomes known for just how terrible it truly is. When this happens, the movie lives on through jokes made about its poor quality, providing a warning for future potential box office bombs.

Some of these movies got a Razzie Award for their terrible quality. Others actually got nominated and awarded an Academy Award, before the majority of movie-goers turned on them. All of these films are pretty tough to sit through, but which movies are the most hated of all time? We reluctantly take a look at the most hated movies of all time from least to most hated.

25. Crash (2004)

The drama showed multiple people's lives as they connected while telling stories about loss and race. The movie actually won three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Writing, and Best Film Editing. However, many moviegoers have said the movie is undeserving of the awards unlike fellow nominee, Brokeback Mountain. They also criticized the way the movie depicted race.

Addressing this claim, the writer, Paul Haggis said, "I was obviously creating a fable. That's obvious. This was never supposed to be a realistic film. Secondly, I designed it so that for the first 20 minutes, I presented stereotypes. I did that on purpose."

24. The Godfather Part III (1990)

This is another movie that probably receives more hate than most since it is compared to the films that came before it. In the film, Michael Corleone is close to his goal of making his family "legitimate." However, his efforts get sidetracked when another family starts moving in. Many fans hate Sofia Coppola's acting in the movie and the incestuous storyline. The great franchise sadly ended on a low note, but critics loved the film and it was nominated for seven Oscars.

23. Jack and Jill (2011)

The comedy shows Jack Sadelstein coming home for Thanksgiving where he will see his twin sister, Jill. Jill is passive-aggressive, needy, and an excuse for Adam Sandler to dress up as a woman for laughs. However, it turns out, not that many people were laughing. The film has a low rating of 3% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and audiences didn't enjoy it either. When the movie is mentioned it's usually to make a joke about how terrible it is.

22. The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

The sci-fi franchise was a huge hit, but even fans admit that this movie was a misstep. This film showed Neo fighting to end the war between humans and the invading machines. One of the many criticisms is that the story was weak and boring. The once original idea behind the franchise finally ran out of steam and because of this, the franchise ended on a bad note.

21. Howard the Duck (1986)

Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, producer George Lucas and such popular stars as Lea Thompson and Tim Robbins brought this cinematic turkey to the screen. With uncomfortable sexual innuendo (duck boobs!) and an unlikeable protagonist, the story doesn't work on any level, and the effects appeared dated even during its initial theatrical release.

20. Batman & Robin (1997)

This film hurt the Batman brand so much that Warner Bros. gave the Caped Crusader nearly a decade of rest before filmmaker Christopher Nolan relaunched the character in Batman Begins. Beware of endless ice puns, awkward moments that lend the campy 1960s TV show gravitas, and more than two hours of pomp and super-villainy signifying nothing. Truly.

19. Reefer Madness (1936)

This propaganda piece was blatantly made to over-exaggerate the dangers that ensue when young people get their hands on marijuana. Often considered one of the first "worst" films ever made, it sees high school students involved in instances of suicide, rape, and even psychotic behavior all caused by the drug. At least this dreck inspired a satirical musical, which was itself made into a cult favorite film in 2005.

18. Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)

Tim Burton's 1994 biopic Ed Wood delves into several entries from the career of Wood, who was a notoriously bad director. However, this film still stands as his most infamous release, featuring the final screen appearance of Dracula star Bela Lugosi. The film is a failure in every conceivable way, from its poor performances and nonsensical story to its mountain of continuity and production flaws.

17. Entourage (2015)

The television series was often the butt of many jokes, but the show still managed to make it through eight seasons. A few years later, the franchise decided to cash in on the fanbase by making a movie. The film was panned by critics and those who hated the show, but it did manage to make its money back.

16. Sex and the City 2 (2010)

The iconic characters came back for a second time on the big screen, but perhaps the franchise should have stopped while it was ahead because this sequel was upsetting to fans and critics.

This movie is full of glamor when it comes to fashion, but lacks any substance when it comes to storytelling. A lot of the progress that the characters made in the first movie are seemingly undone in this sequel in order to make another movie.

15. Jaws: The Revenge (1987)

The classic blockbuster got multiple sequels, but the worst one by far isJaws: The Revenge.This is because there is a shark that actually targets a human in order to get revenge. This, of course, is pretty far-fetched and made it hard for anyone to suspend their disbelief in order to enjoy the movie.

14. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

A staple of campy cinema, this film sees Old Saint Nick kidnapped by Martian parents to bring the joy of the holidays to their children. Its poor special effects and bizarre story have inspired a cult following, and it is noteworthy for featuring actress and singer Pia Zadora in an early role.

13. Gigli (2003)

You would think that having Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez signed on as leads would be a good sign. However, Affleck plays a mobster who kidnaps a mentally challenged man, which is one of the many things that makes the romantic comedy a notoriously bad movie. Everything from the plot to the weird cameos led to the movie being panned by critics and audiences.

12. Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966)

No conversation about the worst movies ever made is complete without this horrid film, which attempts to be a horror movie about a family kidnapped by a pagan cult. The result of a bet that anyone can make a horror film, Manos: The Hands of Fate proves that no, they definitely cannot.

11. Zabriskie Point (1970)

This drama was the second of three English-language releases from director Michelangelo Antonioni. Its poor cinematography, subpar music, and underage cast are among the many elements that have earned the film its status as one of the most derided films ever made.

10. Movie 43 (2013)

So many gifted actors — including some Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated stars — came together for this anthology-style comedy comprised of several vignettes that mistake crass, outrageous content for genuine, laugh-inducing material. Let's just pretend this one didn't happen at all, OK Hollywood?

9. Battlefield Earth (2000)

John Travolta championed this film, which was based on the novel by L. Ron Hubbard. However, the finished film tanked at the box office and soon earned the ire of the entire moviegoing community. It even picked up a total of nine Golden Raspberry Awards over the years for its achievement as one of the "worst" films to ever come along.

8. Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)

Where to start with this one? The terrible acting, the nonexistent story that fails miserably to homage (rip off?) Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds … no, we'll instead pick on the obviously bargain basement level special effects. Did anyone seriously think this was passable at the time? We can't imagine how that's even possible.

7. From Justin to Kelly (2003)

The musical starred the Season 1 winner and runner-up ofAmerican Idol.In it, Kelly Clarkson plays a waitress who falls for a student who is played by JustinGuarini. The writing is terrible and it's obvious that the two are singers, notactors. The movie lost a lot of money and stopped American Idol's plan to spin its stars into the movie world.

6. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Before the prequels, Star Wars had only made a few missteps. When it was announced that the franchise was coming back, there were so many fans who had high hopes. But those hopes were crushed with The Phantom Menace.

In the movie, we get the introduction of the annoying Jar Jar Binks, tedious political talk, and a war against unimpressive drones. It was definitely a sad omen of what was to come from the trilogy.

5. Ghostbusters (2016)

This movie received an overwhelming amount of hatred before it even came to the big screen. It became the most-disliked trailer on YouTube and is currently at over 1 million dislikes. The movie actually wasn't torn apart by critics, so it's mostly fans of the original movie who hate it.

4. Heaven's Gate (1980)

The Western movie has some pretty recognizable names in it like Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, Jeff Bridges, and more. However, production wasn't easy as the film went over budget and had time overruns. The movie made only $3.5 million on a $44 million budget, leading the studio, United Artists, to collapse and ruining the career of director Michael Cimino.

3. Last Tango in Paris (1972)

This might be a controversial pick because this is a controversial movie. The art-house classic shows a young businessman having a strictly sexual relationship with a young Persian woman. The movie includes a shocking rape scene. The scene has been the subject of controversy for years, but most recently, it has come to light that the scene might not have been filmed with actress Maria Schneider's consent. This outraged many fans and people in the movie business.

2. The Birth of a Nation (1915)

The silent film is an adaptation of the novel, The Clansman: A Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan. The three-hour movie shows two families during the Civil War and Reconstruction. It is notoriously racist due to its portrayal of black people and the way it shows the Ku Klux Klan as the protagonist. The film was a success at the time, but many now can't bring up the film without talking about the racist aspects of it.

1. Triumph of the Will (1935)

The 1935 movie was propaganda that pushed the Nazi message. It was, therefore, popular among the Third Reich, but now, the film is banned in Germany. Some clips from the movie have since been used in documentaries.
